Redirected from: Google bombing

Definition: Google bomb

A campaign that causes a Web page to rank number one or very high in the Google search results list. The first bomb was unleashed in 1999, which caused the Microsoft home page to rank number one for the search words "more evil than Satan himself." Another Google bomb in 2004 produced a biography of George W. Bush for the keywords "miserable failure."

Create Thousands of Links
A Google bomb is deployed by creating links on new or existing Web pages that all point to a target page. Thus, anyone with a popular blog, who can influence thousands of people, can attempt to create a Google bomb. However, it was a lot easier in the past to have an effective Google bomb than it is today. Google's analysis of Web pages is a lot more sophisticated, and Google bombs can be identified along with myriad other approaches people use to rank their sites higher (see Google algorithms and page ranking).
