Definition: Gears

(1) (Gear S) See Samsung Gear S.

(2) A software platform from Google for running applications locally. Introduced in 2007 and installed as a browser extension and accessed via JavaScript, it provides a local server for caching Web pages and other HTTP resources so they can be accessed offline. It also includes an SQLite-based database for storing local data and a "WorkerPool" module that allows JavaScript code to run in the background. In 2011, Google announced it was migrating Gears to Web storage, and it removed the Gears interface from Gmail, Google Calendar and Chrome browser. See Web Storage and Google. See also Samsung Gear.
