Redirected from: GW

Definition: gigawatt

One billion watts. A watt is volts times amps. When an AI data center is said to draw one gigawatt (GW), it is drawing one billion watts of electricity continously. A regular cloud data center draws much less, generally from 20 to 100 megawatts (MW); however, a huge AI campus may draw 1 GW and more.

AI data centers consume much more electricity due to the massive amount of mathematical processing required to train models for chatbots and agents. See GPU, chatbot and AI agent.
