Definition: GERAN

(GSM EDGE Radio Access Network) The air interface used in a GSM cellular network that supports EDGE packet data. A GERAN uses Octagonal Phase Shift Keying (8PSK) modulation rather than the Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) in a non-EDGE network. The Octagonal method carries three bits per symbol rather than one. See 2G/3G architecture and RAN.
