Definition: FreeDOS

An open source, MS-DOS operating system that is capable of running most DOS applications. FreeDOS manages memory better than the original operating system and includes long file name support. The project was initiated in 1994 by Jim Hall when Microsoft stopped selling MS-DOS separately as it prepared to release Windows 95. Numerous pre-release versions of FreeDOS were available prior to the official Version 1.0 launch in 2006. See DOS.
