The information Facebook collects about its members for its own purposes that members do not see. It is gleaned from member postings, from Facebook friends and friends of friends, as well as when members allow Facebook to find friends using their contact lists. One way the information is used is the "people you may know" message, suggesting that members may want to connect with these other members. See
