Definition: FOIRL

(Fiber Optic Inter Repeater Link) An IEEE fiber-optic Ethernet standard. FOIRL and 10Base-F were compatible, but FOIRL was an earlier standard used to extend a backbone beyond the 328-foot limitation of 10Base-T. FOIRL was limited to .6 miles, whereas 10Base-F extended to 1.2 miles and was a more comprehensive standard. See 10Base-F and Ethernet.
