Definition: MediaFLO

The broadcast technology from Qualcomm that is the foundation of private labeled mobile TV service from carriers such as AT&T and Verizon, as well as Qualcomm's own 3G mobile TV network, dubbed FLO TV. Introduced in 2005, Qualcomm suspended sales of FLO TV receivers in 2010, announcing that FLO TV would close down in 2011. It sold its FCC license for the FLO TV spectrum to AT&T.

The MediaFLO Technology
MediaFLO uses the Forward Link Only (FLO) air interface to deliver video to CDMA2000 and WCDMA-based smartphones. Using the same radio frequency in each cell to eliminate the handoffs required in traditional cellular systems, its layered approach allows for a graceful degradation of service. A base layer reaches all phones, while an enhancement layer provides a faster video frame rate for phones closer to the towers. See CDMA, mobile TV and mobisode.

FLO Layers
The layered approach provides for a graceful degradation as users move farther from the towers.
