Definition: Oracle Exadata

A database machine and storage server from Oracle. Using the Oracle Database, Oracle Exadata was initially designed with HP hardware for data warehousing. Incorporating the Sun Oracle Database Machine, Exadata 2 was launched in 2009 as a solution for both data warehousing and online transaction processing (OLTP). Available in half, full and multi-rack configurations, Oracle Exadata systems use Intel Xeon processors and InfiniBand channels.

Exadata in the Cloud
Oracle Exadata Cloud offers the database machine as a cloud service. It enables customers to provision up to 32 database servers and 64 storage servers with databases up to 2.5PB. See database machine and InfiniBand.

Oracle Exadata Racks
High-end Exadata machines have reached "exascle" proportions. Each full rack contains two database servers and 14 storage servers with more than 700TB of solid state capacity. (Image courtesy of Oracle.)
