Definition: Windows XP Embedded


The first branding of Windows for embedded systems. Windows XP Embedded was an enhanced version of XP for PDAs, handhelds and other appliances that used the x86 CPU. It supported such features as CompactPCI and the ability to boot from flash memory or CD-ROM. Released in 2001, XP Embedded evolved from the embedded version of Windows NT. In 2008, its name was officially changed to Windows Embedded Standard (Windows CE was renamed Windows Embedded Compact).

Unlike Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded could run regular applications and drivers written for Windows XP, but could only run on x86 CPUs. See embedded system, Windows CE and Windows IoT.
