Definition: electron beam imaging

A technology from Delphax Technologies used in high-speed digital printing. It is similar to laser and LED printers in that toner is applied to a charged replica of the image to be printed and then the toned image is transferred to paper and fused. However, instead of using light to create the image, it uses electrons.

Electron Beam Imaging
The image is printed by (1) charging the drum, (2) adhering the toner to the drum, (3) transferring and fusing the toned image to the paper, and (4) cleaning the surface and erasing the residual charge.

Electron Beam Printer
This Delphax 180 IE cut sheet printer uses electron beam imaging to print 180 duplexed pages per minute. Other models print more than 800 ppm. (Image courtesy of Delphax Systems.)
