Definition: Drupal

An open source framework for a content management system (CMS) that is used to develop large-scale websites. Drupal comes with a set of core modules that are expanded by thousands of add-ons from the Drupal community. Based on PHP, Drupal supports a variety of databases such as MySQL and SQLite.

Developed in 2001, the name was derived from the Drop.org website that had some of the original code. Drupal was originally written by Dries Buytaert, who named the site after the Dutch word "druppel," which means a drop (of liquid). See content management system.
