Definition: Data Center Alley


An area with a high concentration of datacenters. Considered the largest cluster of datacenters on the planet, Data Center Alley in Ashburn, Virginia is outside Washington, DC. It spans Fairfax and Loudoun counties and handles an estimated 70% of global Internet traffic every day.

A newer Data Center Alley is in Oregon around Hillsboro (see Silicon Forest) and central Oregon. Access to hydroelectric power from the Columbia River is a major draw. See AI datacenter.
