Tape) An earlier helical scan magnetic tape technology from Sony. Introduced in 1987, DAT was a CD-quality format that wound up being used by musicians and sound studios rather than consumers. A year later, Sony and HP defined the Digital Data Storage (DDS) format for data backup and storage. Sony ceased production of DAT drives in 2005. See
