Definition: DALL-E

An AI image generator from OpenAI that creates images from text descriptions. Introduced in 2021, the name is a mix of the famous Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali and Pixar's animated WALL-E movie. Using more than 10 billion text-image pairs, DALL-E was derived from OpenAI's GPT-3 large language model (see GPT). DALL-E2 provides four times the resolution and greater realism than DALL-E, and DALL-E3 enables editing of just a part of an image rather than starting over again. See AI image generator.

A Giraffe Imitating a Turtle
These are two of the 30 giraffe-turtle images on the OpenAI website. They were created by DALL-E from the following three prompts: a professional high-quality illustration of a giraffe turtle chimera, a giraffe imitating a turtle and a giraffe made of turtle. Chimeras are mythical creatures with parts from different animals. (Images courtesy of OpenAI.)
