Definition: D-5

(Digital-5) A 1/2" broadcast-quality component digital videotape format that records uncompressed frames in the ITU-R BT.601 standard. D-5 VTRs use the same cassettes as D-3. Because D-5 uses 1/2" media and also conforms to ITU-R BT.601, it is a less-costly version of the 19mm D1 format and more widely used. D-5 HD provides high-definition video up to 1080 lines at a 5:1 compression ratio. D-5 HD VTRs also support the standard definition (SD) format. See ITU-R BT.601, D-1, SD formats and HD formats.
