Definition: Cyber Monday

The Monday following the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., in which e-commerce websites offer many special deals. It is the online counterpart to retail-store Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Coined in 2005 by Shop.org, Cyber Monday was fueled by the faster Internet connections people had at work. As the speed of Internet access in the home improved, there is less need to wait for an office connection.

To increase Christmas sales, Cyber Monday has been promoted in other countries, including Canada, England, France and Germany, starting in 2008. It came to Australia and Colombia in 2012.
