Definition: Coriolis vibrating gyroscope

A gyroscope that uses vibration to detect position. Also called a "vibrating structure gyroscope," there are several types of CVG gyroscopes created by MEMS and chip fabrication for mobile applications. Materials can be made to vibrate, and their movement can be measured. In 1835, French scientist Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis developed the math for the movement of water wheels. See piezoelectric, MEMS and gyroscope.
