Definition: Classical IP

An IETF standard for transmitting IP traffic in an ATM network. Classical IP performs the conversion from the IP addresses in the packets into ATM addresses as long as the destination is within the same subnet. Routing between networks is not supported. The Classical IP-enabled driver in the end station sends out an ARP request to a Classical IP-enabled ARP server, which returns the ATM address. See ARP.
