Released in beta in 2022, people rate the responses so that the character improves over time. A paid subscription ensures fast response during busy periods, more customization and real-time voice calls.

Users can have a back-and-forth all day long with their made-up character, and the dialog can become very charming or very nasty depending on the user input. It can also be very humerous. However, Character.ai has also been accused of lacking safeguards and improper behavior with minors. Lawsuits have claimed teenagers have taken their life based on the chatbot's dialog.
