Definition: CPRM

(Content Protection for Recorded Media) A copyright protection system from 4C Entity, founded in 1998 by IBM, Intel, Panasonic (Matsushita) and Toshiba. CPRM was designed for user-recordable media such as DVD-Audio discs and SD cards, while CPPM (Copy Protection for Prerecorded Media) was the commercial media counterpart. A plan for using CPRM on regular hard disks was abandoned.

CPRM was created at the time copyright protection was major news as songs and videos were illegally copied by the droves. However, there was little use of SD devices supporting CPRM in the U.S., and DVD-Audio is long defunct. However, other copy protection methods for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs are widely used (see CSS and DVD region codes). See copy protection.
