Definition: CDDB

(CD DataBase) The first online music database used to identify music CDs in order to obtain the missing album and artist information (see metadata). The CDDB was originally a community driven service but became a commercial product when CDDB, Inc. was founded in 1995. The company was renamed Gracenote three years later and then acquired by Sony in 2008. The first version of CDDB (CDDB1) was turned over to the freedb community and was compatible with freedb client software. Subsequent CDDB versions were not compatible and became the Gracenote Media Database. See freedb, Gracenote MusicID, music CD identification and music search.
