Definition: Base App

Coinbase's "everything app" built on Coinbase's Layer 2 network (see Basechain). In 2025, Base App was introduced to replace Coinbase Wallet, the company's original crypto wallet launched in 2017.

Base App is a non-custodial crypto wallet for iOS, Android and the Chrome browser, meaning users are responsible for its safety (see non-custodial wallet). Like Coinbase Wallet, the self-custody wallet enables users to trade, lend and borrow crypto on decentralized exchanges (DeXs), as well as buy and sell NFTs. If users have an account on Coinbase's centralized exchange, they can link that account.

Plus Payments, Social Media and Mini Apps
Coinbase Wallet was strictly a crypto wallet, but Base App adds a payment system, social network for crypto users and an ecosystem of companies that add Mini Apps for decentralized finance, all under the same user interface. See decentralized exchange and Coinbase.
