Definition: Apple HomePod

A wireless speaker and Siri virtual assistant from Apple. Introduced in 2018, Apple touted the HomePod as a quality sound system as well as the ideal gateway to the Apple Music service because users can ask Siri to play songs. HomePod is also a hub for controlling lights and accessories in the automated home (see smart home).

When more HomePods are added, the devices communicate with each other to balance and control the sound. Two units can be configured as left and right stereo speakers. See smart speaker, virtual assistant and smart home.

Second-Generation HomePod
In 2023, the second generation of the original HomePod debuted with two fewer mics and two fewer tweeters than the original. At 6.6" high, the five-pound speaker is essentially the same size as the original but includes advances that debuted in the mini units. Sound and Vision Magazine praised the new HomePod, giving it five stars in three categories. (Image courtesy of Apple Inc.)

The Colorful Minis
In 2020, Apple debuted the junior HomePods. At a third the cost, the spheres are half the size and 1/7th the weight of the large HomePod. (Image courtesy of Apple Inc.)

The Original
Encased in a mesh shell, the first HomePod had six mics and seven tweeters. Although reviews of its sound quality were generally good, the Siri functionality was limited and the unit left a stain on oiled wooden surfaces. It was discontinued in 2021. However, unopened units on eBay sold for twice their original price. (Image courtesy of Apple Inc.
