Definition: Android TV

Google's second-generation smart TV platform. Introduced in 2014, Android TV added voice search to the original Google TV and changed the branding. Set-top boxes and smart TVs with Android TV began to emerge. Android TV can be operated by its remote control, a game controller or a mobile app. Using the feature in Google's Chromecast, content can be sent from a computer or mobile device directly to the TV.

Google to Android to Google
In 2020, Android TV was superseded by Google TV, resurrecting the original branding. Chromecast with Google TV creates a Google-powered smart TV (see Google TV). See Nexus Player.
