Definition: Amazon phone scam

A swindle that starts out with a phone call claiming to be from Amazon.com. The message states that people must authorize a charge of a certain amount and to press a key to continue. If gullible people allow the caller to talk them into downloading remote control software, the scammers have access to everything on the computer, including bookmarks of financial sites. Typically targeting the elderly, the scamming organization may wind up talking to four to five hundred people after making hundreds of thousands of calls. Out of those calls, perhaps four or five people are scammed. See Amazon.com and scam.
