Definition: Amazon Web Services

A variety of cloud-based services from Amazon.com that developers use to deploy Web applications. Launched in 2002, the most notable Amazon Web Services (AWS) are its cloud computing and storage offerings (see EC2), as well as its crowdsourcing system (see Mechanical Turk). In 2011, Amazon added a supercomputing service, offering a cluster of computers for performing intensive calculations. AWS is a huge and very profitable business for the company.
