Definition: AWS

(1) See Amazon Web Services.

(2) (Advanced Wireless Services) Electromagnetic spectrum sold to carriers by the FCC in 2006. It uses the 1710-1755 and 2110-2155 MHz bands for 3G, 4G, etc. cellular service. A small part of the MMDS spectrum used for wireless cable was re-allocated to AWS as well (see MMDS).

AWS transmits in pairs: the 1700 band is the uplink, and 2100 is the downlink. Newer mobile devices support AWS, and Verizon has branded its LTE service in the AWS band as "XLTE."
