Definition: AVIF

(AV1 Image Format) A still image file format from the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). AVIF was derived from the AV1 video format and features smaller file sizes at the same quality level as the WebP, PNG and JPEG standards. For example, whereas WebP images are known to be as much as 30% smaller than JPEG, AVIF is 50% smaller. AVIF supports both lossless and lossy compression, 8, 10 and 12-bit color depth and 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. In late 2021, Chrome and Firefox were the first Web browsers to support AVIF. See AV1, WebP and chroma subsampling.
