Definition: AVC-Intra

(Advanced Video Coding-Intra) An HD video format in professional Panasonic camcorders that employs the high-level modes of the H.264/AVC standard. Introduced in 2007 for electronic news gathering (ENG), AVC-Intra uses intraframe coding for high-quality editing in contrast to AVCHD, an H.264 interframe format (see AVCHD and interframe coding).

AVC-Intra records 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions with greater accuracy by using 10 bits per pixel for compression. Bit rates are 50 and 100 Mbps. AVC-Intra 50 scales horizontal resolution from 1920 to 1440 pixels and from 1280 to 960 and uses 4:2:0 color sampling. AVC-Intra 100 improves colors with 4:2:2.

AVC-Ultra
In 2012, Panasonic debuted its highest-quality video format. AVC-Ultra includes 4:4:4 color sampling, 12-bit pixel compression and 440 Mbps. It also offers a 25 Mbps "Proxy AV" mode for fast previewing. See H.264, HD formats, 10-bit pixel compression and chroma subsampling.
