Definition: AI guardrails

Controls put in place in the inference engine to prevent a chatbot or embedded agent from going rogue. Examples of guardrails are scanners that run alongside inference execution and filters that look for certain patterns. See AI legislation.

Guardrails may also be added in the training stage of a model, but the inference execution is the primary location because that is where the results are generated. See inference.
