Definition: AHCI


(Advanced Host Controller Interface) A standard controller interface for SATA drives from Intel, AMD and other hardware vendors. The operating system and file utilities interface with an AHCI driver to command the SATA device to transfer data. Introduced in 2004, AHCI supports hot swapping and native command queuing (see hot swap and NCQ). Contrast with NVMe. See SATA and PATA.
