Definition: ADS-B


(Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) An aircraft location system that broadcasts its position periodically to air traffic control. Deployed worldwide, ADS-B picks up its location from satellites. It is part of the U.S. Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) that required all commercial aircraft to be compliant by 2020. See GPS and air traffic control.
