Definition: Blu-ray 3D

A Blu-ray format that provides stereo frames for stereoscopic 3D viewing on 3D TV sets. The type of glasses the viewer wears depends on the TV set (see 3D TV and 3D glasses). Blu-ray 3D discs are compatible with 2D Blu-ray players, which will decode only the 2D video stream.

Blu-ray 3D uses the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, which is an extension to the H.264 encoding standard used by Blu-ray. See Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray and 3D visualization.
