Definition: 2.5/5G Ethernet

Ethernet transmission speeds of 2.5 and 5 Gbps. In 2014, Cisco, Aquantia, Freescale and Xilinx formed the NBASE-T Alliance to promote new Ethernet standards. Faster Wi-Fi speeds via 802.11ac Wave 2 surpass 1G Ethernet, and 10G Ethernet is a huge expense for companies because they have to replace cables. The creation of speeds in between solves this problem. See 802.11ac and Ethernet.
