Definition: .tel

A top-level Internet domain used to provide contact details for a company or individual. The .tel domain is unlike other Internet domains in use (.com, .edu, etc.). The domain name system (DNS) is actually used as a directory with the data stored in the domain name records. Launched in 2009 by Telnic Ltd. in London, which manages the root servers, the .tel names are assigned to customers by accredited registrars around the world.

For Companies and Individuals
Virtually any data can be made part of a .tel registration. For example, a company can store its Web and email addresses along with phone and fax numbers for all its branch offices. Individuals can store their home and work numbers, email address, Skype name and social network IDs, and they can require passwords to obtain private data. See Internet domain name and DNS.
