Definition: Zoom fatigue

The weariness that comes from too much videoconferencing. Coined during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zoom fatigue refers to the burnout people experience when all personal interaction is via a computer screen no matter whether Zoom or some other videoconferencing program is used. People also tire of the momentary blips in audio and video that occur all the time in virtual meetings. In addition, it is difficult to keep looking straight into the camera in order to maintain good eye contact.

Students in virtual classes have expressed anxiety after long hours online. Some feel awkward or embarrassed not knowing when to speak or how to look at the camera. There is also general exhaustion after long sessions. Zoom fatigue can cause physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea. It may also cause frustration and stress. See Zoom videoconferencing.
