(GlobalFoundries Inc., Malta, NY) GlobalFoundries was created by the spin-off of AMD's chip manufacturing in 2009. It is the largest pure-play semiconductor fab headquartered in the U.S. with plants in New York, Vermont, Singapore and Germany. GlobalFoundries became privately owned by Mubadala Investment Company, a sovereign wealth fund of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) until 2021, when it became a public company. However, Mubadala retains majority ownership.
IBM and GlobalFoundries
In 2015, IBM sold its semiconductor business to GlobalFoundries, which took over IBM fabs in New York and Vermont and continued to make chips for the company. However, when GlobalFoundries stopped development of the next chip generation, IBM switched production to Samsung. Years of litigation followed and a confidential settlement was reached in 2025. See

GlobalFoundries/TSMC Lawsuit
In 2019, GlobalFoundries sued Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) for patent infringement. TSMC countersued, and both parties resolved their dispute by agreeing to honor each other's patents. See
